das weisse haus and Erste Bank presents this year's Erste Bank Art Awardee: Pêdra Costa!

Pêdra Costa (Nova Iguaçu, 1978) is a formative Brazilian, visual and urban Anthropologist, Performer and Tarot Reader based in Berlin that utilizes intimacy to connect with collectivity. They work with their body to create fragmented epistemologies of queer communities within ongoing colonial legacies. While tapping into the powers of resilient knowledge from a variety of subversive ancestral cultures and spiritualities that were integral to anti-colonial and necropolitan survival, their work with the body seeks to decode violence and transform failure.

For the duration of the solo exhibition "101011", das weisse haus transforms into a multi-sensory landscape of experience that encourages inwardness and self-exploration. Through the use of spiritual technologies and practices, Pêdra Costa challenges the notions of the self and opens up a liminal space in which the alchemy of art and spirituality unfolds. It is oriented around the 22 major arcanas of the Tarot archetypes, which occupy the space as installative works and guide the visitors on their self-knowledge journey.

This year’s prize will be carried out in cooperation with the Austrian Cultural Forum Warsaw. In addition to the solo exhibition at das weisse haus (November 2023 – January 2024) and at the ACF Warsaw (opening February/March 2024), the award carries with it a one-month residency in Warsaw, as a source of inspiration and to expand one’s own network.
