The radical potential of utopian projects lays in its basic concept. Utopian projects such as Sci-Fi (and fantasy) are constructing worlds that never existed before and by that are questioning hegemony. Hegemony, as we know it, is hegemony since it is so common that one rarely questions or accepts it due to a lack of any other possibility (oder: due to lack of other possibilities). This kind of artistic practice cannot NOT be a political act. This, not merely due to its comment, content or message about society or power-relation. But much more, due to the fact that it constructs a different way of being and that things are or can be different.

One key question that artists dealing with utopian concepts are confronted with is „What if“?

We will travel back in time to look at different utopian projects that described their own “What if” from the arts, literature and music and see what is left of them.

Sheri Avraham has been working in the field of art and culture - as an artist, curator, theatre maker and teacher for more than 10 years. Currently, she is the chairwoman of IG BILDENDE KUNST. She sees her work as a translation between theory and practice, between classes, religions, geographies and generations.
