As a survivor of the Holocaust, psychiatrist Dr. Alfons Adler returns to his childhood home in Vienna in 1945, wearing a US uniform. His former teacher, Prof. Dr. Reitknecht, celebrates his grandson Otto's seventh birthday in the house purchased for a pittance. Chocolate and cigarettes brought by Alfons are allowed to stay, but Alfons himself is asked to leave. However, Alfons refuses to give up his quest for humanity.

"Dorothea Zeemann's Legacy" casts an unflinching gaze upon the grotesque societal conditions of post-war Austria. Across three acts – in 1945, 1955, and 1960 – the Jewish protagonist, confronted with the legacy of National Socialism, futilely attempts to find belonging in his former and only home. Under the direction of Ingrid Lang, this play, which until recently existed only as a typescript in the literary archive of the Austrian National Library and has now been published by Sessler Verlag, receives its premiere. It was authored by a writer (1909 – 1993) who significantly influenced the Austrian literary scene of the post-war era.
