Coincidence of Wants
Coincidence of Wants. Artists exchange. Exhibition View, MUSA, Photo:kunstdokumentation.com
Art collections are not just the hallmarks of museums and moguls. Many artists own collections as well. Unlike their prominent counterparts, they don’t originate in generous bequests or massive purchasing budgets — artists collect via exchanges of individual works with other artists.
Like other major art centers, Vienna is full of such collections. They typically exist away from the public eye, in artist studios and living spaces. “Coincidence of Wants” shines a spotlight on these unknown collections. Assembled as a group exhibit, they reflect Vienna’s complex artistic networks as a system of mutual reciprocity.
