Johanna Kandl, Helmut Kandl
Johanna & Helmut Kandl, "Koschenilleläuse", Mala, Lanzarote, 2017
The exhibition deals with (raw) materials, their origin, the social environment in which they are gained, but also their sensuous components.
Johanna follows up on materials of painting, Helmut, who likes to cook and eat, for the edible – there are many overlaps in the useages (gum arabic, linseed oil, dammar, mastic, hormoz red or cochineal). The search for their origins led the artists to Sumatra, Palawan, Chios, Sudan, Hormoz, Lanzarote, Waldviertel and the Pre-Alps.
Johanna Kandl's tempera paintings and paperwork, Helmut Kandl's photographic work and their collectively produced videos shimmer between a didactic character and a narrative depiction of the sensuality of materials, myths and legends.
