Dewey Dell - SLEEP TECHNIQUE: A response to Chauvet-Pont d’Arc Cave in Ardèche, France

The Italian performance group Dewey Dell is back at brut! Their new work SLEEP TECHNIQUE continues to combine bass sound and a cool, minimalist aesthetic on stage, while engaging in some pre-historic forensics.

The information we have about the early days of humankind is perceived through present brains. And yet, parts of the old myths and rituals seem, strangely unconsciously, to still be present in many things. Based on the paintings in the Chauvet cave outside the small town of Vallon-Pont-d’Arc, France, Dewey Dell attempt to give the audience a better understanding of the 36,000-year-old paintings in that cave via the darkness of the theatre space, thus sparking a conversation between old spirits and new art. This way, SLEEP TECHNIQUE examines and explores the aesthetics and the legend embedded in these ancient artworks while experimentally translating them into a contemporary performance context.

Dewey Dell is a group of artists from Italy dedicated not only to performance but also to electronic music. Established in 2007 by the three siblings Teodora, Demetrio and Agata Castellucci as well as Eugenio Resta, Dewey Dell generally devise their projects in a collective process, to which every single member contributes their expertise in composition, choreography and light design. Since the establishment of Dewey Dell, the four Italian artists have generated seven performances that have successfully toured the whole world. Also, the group has devised three performative live concerts since 2011 (EP Black Fanfare 2013).
