Devendra Banhart was born in Houston, Texas and moved with his mother to her home city Caracas, Venezuela when his parents separated. In his teenage years the family moved to Los Angeles where he learned English and discovered his passions for skateboarding and music. His first live performances took place at the San Francisco Art Institute. Since then Banhart has resided in New York City, Paris, San Francisco, and once again Los Angeles, where he is currently based.
Banhart first attracted international attention with the release of his debut album “Oh Me Oh My…The Way the Day Goes By the Sun Is Setting Dogs Are Dreaming Lovesongs of the Christmas Spirit” (2002) – a collection of songs that he recorded for himself. It would be followed by numerous other albums: “Rejoicing in the Hands” (2004), “Niño Rojo” (2004), “Cripple Crow” (2005), “Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon” (2007), and “What Will We Be” (2009). “Mala”, his 2013 debut on Nonesuch Records, was described by Q as “the best of his career”; the Wall Street Journal called it “his most incisive, delicate, and appealing work thus far”.
