Antonio's imaginary workshop
Choreography meets art from Hong Kong

The painter and sculptor Antonio Mak (1951-1994), a Hong Kong painter and sculptor, is one of the most significant artists of his time, whose works many have encountered. In particular Maks figurative bronze casting works, which emanate from the real male - mostly his own - body and impress with a sense of humor and surreal imagination both visually and from technical mastery, create a unique iconography that simultaneously draws on Western and Chinese metaphors.

The choreographic arrangement based on the few existing sources on the life and work of this exceptional artist is staged on the entire floor of the WUK museum rooms for two female performers (Katharina Senk, Manaho, Shimokawa) and a male performer (Tomaž Simatovic). Choreography is similar to the work of the sculptor to the process of exposing physical articulations and whimsical object landscapes. The body's own body is put to a test because it appears to be involved in a network of opposing tendencies. This dilemma manifests itself at Antonio Mak in a strong impulse of movement, which resides in his sculptures, which want to formally emerge from themselves. The performers follow this impulse in a very personal reference to the picture and text materials.
