November 12, 1918 saw the proclamation of a democratic republic in Austria. The inferno of the First World War was over, the Habsburg Monarchy was in ruins and the future of the new state lay wide open. The museum’s inaugural exhibition Into the Unknown – Austria Since 1918 is dedicated to the country’s most recent century. The starting point is the experiences of the people and the hopes, but also the fears, associated with the founding of the republic. Seven thematic focal points highlight the development and the transformation of democracy and society. The exhibition also shows what the absence of democracy can mean.

Remarkable objects, compelling documents, artistic interpretations and interactive media stations bring contemporary history to life. We invite you to share your perspectives on the past!
