Peter Ponger Trio feat. Wolfgang Puschnig / Liquid Cities - Sam's Bar Concert
Since the beginning of Sam's Bar, Viennese pianist Peter Ponger has been a permanent part of the program. His rare, virtuoso, and unique solo improvisation concerts take listeners on extraordinary sound journeys into ever new, dazzling harmonic worlds. Peter Ponger creates new, until-now unexplored melodic landscapes full of beauty from moment to moment. This year, he will perform at Sam's Bar in a trio with Peter Herbert on bass and Valentin Duit on drums, joined by jazz great Wolfgang Puschnig on saxophone.
Close your eyes, step into unknown territory, and be amazed!
Peter Ponger studied at the Juilliard School of Music in New York and the Conservatory of Vienna. He received the Theodor Körner Prize for composition and has performed in concerts with Steve Grossman, Trilok Gurtu, Jeff Berlin, Alphonse Mouzon, and Wynton Marsalis, among others. He composed music for several films, including Gebürtig by Robert Schindel and Heaven Under Stones by Peter Patzak.
Wolfgang Puschnig is, alongside Joe Zawinul, one of the most important active jazz musicians from Austria. As a brilliant soloist and imaginative virtuoso, he is repeatedly invited to participate in international projects as a guest musician. Above all, it is the numerous ensembles he has founded, such as Air Mail, Pat Brothers, AM4, and Alpine Aspects, that mark him as an internationally recognized stylistic boundary-crosser without fear of new musical influences. His musical projects are a reflection of his artistic openness, curiosity, and desire to experiment—at the highest level.
The Vorarlberg-born double bassist and composer Peter Herbert, who has lived in Paris since 2003 and previously spent 16 years in New York, has led a highly dynamic artistic life with around 100 concerts worldwide. The Hans Koller Prize winner for "Musician of the Year" in 2001 not only performs solo concerts but also prefers duos, such as with David Tronzo (CD: Segmente, AZM 1001), or with Carol Robinson. In Vienna, his collaboration with the Kohne 4tet (CD Joni featuring ena and Wolfgang Mitterer) is a central artistic activity. As a sought-after sideman, he has played in various jazz formations, such as the Marc Copland/John Abercrombie Quartet, Bobby Previte's "The Horse", John Clarke Octet, and Robin Eubanks' "Mental Images". With over 140 CD recordings, his work in this field is also well-documented. Peter Herbert is also a versatile composer, creating works for various orchestras and chamber music ensembles. In 1999, he established his own internet record label, "Aziza Music", and since 2007, he has been teaching a small double bass class at the JIM of the Anton Bruckner Private University in Linz.
Valentin Duit studied drums in Vienna and Lucerne and is involved as a performer and improviser in various bands and projects, including Dsilton, Harry Pepl (tape) & The (Lonely) Single Swinger Band, Tobias Meissl Trio, and the Vienna Improvisers Orchestra. Additionally, he works with a quartet he founded with Robert Unterköfler, Tobias Meissl, and Ivar Roban Križić, as well as on solo drumming for his own musical pieces.
