THE MOVER
This award-winning film offers a gripping account of Žanis Lipke (1900-1987), who was honoured as Righteous Among the Nations for his heroic deeds during the second world war. Lipke embarked on a covert operation to save local Jews from Nazi persecution and certain death, moving them from the Riga Ghetto to an underground bunker hidden on his property. From the start, Sīmanis has created a powerfully ominous and suspenseful atmosphere, positioning the viewer as a reluctant eyewitness to the unfolding horrors. Nevertheless, the film reminds the viewer that among the cruelty and despair of the Nazi era, there were brave individuals who had risked their lives to save others.
