Lecture / Performance World Premiere in German and English

There’s a disease rampant in society, transmitted by the cold light of the displays of our smartphones and laptops. Its name is synonymous with self-optimisation, individualisation and radicalisation: INFLUENCA. Basic values in our already mutated and infected working environments are simple: Be in a good mood, set your relationship status to neoliberal, don’t allow yourself to be bought, just to be financially influenced. In HOW TO GO VIRAL, Barbis Ruder aka Dr. Dr. Ruder and her team commence their treatment.

There will be an artist talk following the show on April 9th.

Since the outbreak of INFLUENCA in 2018, this highly contagious innovation constitutes the pure form of a laughing nightmare of a capitalism of the last days. The viral attack of multi-resistant INFLUENCA on diseased economic systems poses a challenge to any immune response. The trending topic is a principle that is as simple as it is well-established: subversion by affirmation. This strategy is suitable for the masses and works brilliantly.

Endorsed by the profound opinions of various experts, HOW TO GO VIRAL provides at the same time guidance and new value systems in a reality affected by INFLUENCA. In their self-exploitation, artists have always been the pioneers of all that is beautiful in this world. Dr. Dr. Ruder and her team will now set out to counter those artist-devised strategies of self-optimisation, individualisation and radicalisation. They do not fear this new world of working and its representative, INFLUENCA.

Barbis Ruder lives and works in Vienna. In 2015, she completed her studies of transmedia art in Brigitte Kowanz’s class at the University of Applied Arts Vienna. She is currently devising sculptures between the poles of medical engineering and body techniques as part of her doctorate in artistic research at the same university. Barbis Ruder creates multimedia pieces for both the exhibition space and the stage. Her work has been awarded, among others, the H13 prize for performance of Kunstraum Niederoesterreich (2014), the Art Prize of the Freiburg Archdiocese (2015) and an Honorary Mention of the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science, Research and Economy (2015). In 2017, she received a fellowship from Kunststiftung Baden-Württemberg and the START stipend for media art by the Austrian Federal Chancellor’s Office’s Department of Cultural Affairs.
