Dance, with its fleeting gestures and ephemeral presence, has long challenged photography to render movement visible. The ALBERTINA’s first exhibition dedicated to dance photography draws exclusively from its own extensive collection to explore how expression, rhythm, and motion were translated into compelling images. The presentation spans from 1860s ballet portraits to snapshots of early free dance around 1900 and extends to the avant-garde experiments of the 1920s and ’30s.
The works on view reflect both technical innovation and shifting aesthetic approaches. Particular attention is given to Vienna in the early twentieth century, where a vibrant independent scene played a decisive role in redefining dance as an autonomous art form.
