The Backyard On the Seventh Floor - Vernissage
„The Backyard On the Seventh Floor“ by Corinna Helenelund
Curated by Frederike Sperling
With "The Backyard On the Seventh Floor" das weisse haus presents Corinna Helenelund's first solo exhibition in Austria. The artist shows numerous textile works from her titular work series engaging with the unwordability of abstract physical pain and emotion. Where words cannot grasp the complexity of one's perception, Corinna Helenelund introduces poetic strategies of externalizing somatic sensation and psychological states.
In "The Backyard On the Seventh Floor" (2017 - 2022), Corinna Helenelund weaves a soft vocabulary of both figurative and abstract shapes, forging an intuitive and generous language through which she turns her innermost self inside out. Experiences such as unruly labor pains, uncontrollable headaches, or depressive episodes turn into idiosyncratic creatures, attain a bodiness in their own right through specific forms, colors and textures. In so doing, they become detached from the flesh and hence constitute a counterpart that one can relate to, that one can wrestle but also make peace with.
The show embodies an immersive, sensual landscape that invites visitors to linger within it. A meditation guided by the artist herself and produced especially for the exhibition, can be experienced on site via headphones and will remain available on our online platform dwhX for the duration of the exhibition: www.dwhX.space.
