NASSAU CALLING - Art in The Bahamas [re]-visited is the second in-depth survey of contemporary art originating from this small Caribbean nation. Almost a decade ago, the show FUNKY NASSAU at the Nassauischer Kunstverein in Wiesbaden (Germany) introduced this unknown cultural landscape on an international level and, since then, the art scene has reached unforeseen heights.

Traditionally The Bahamas has occupied a gateway position as a vanguard incubator for the whole Caribbean region; the same can be said for the art scene, where it is considered a regional frontrunner. Artists like Blue Curry, Tavares Stachan, John Beadle or Lavar Munroe are receiving international recognition through exposure at exhibitions like SITE Santa Fe Biennial, The Biennale for the Americas, the Martinique Biennale and the Venice Biennale, to name a few.

The show comprises some of the highlights stemming from a range of visual artists from different generations and displaying a variety of media by showcasing artists like Kendall Hanna, Nadine Seymore Munroe, Kareem Mortimer, Jeffrey Meris and John Cox among others.
NASSAU CALLING not only re-visits the art from The Bahamas but certainly encourages the viewer to re-examine some easily conceived stereotypes about the nation and what it represents globally.

NASSAU CALLING - Art in The Bahamas [re]-visited is curated by Amanda Coulson, director of The National Art Gallery of The Bahamas and Nassau based gallerist and art historian Ulrich Voges.
