Liquid Loft’s new piece puts the act of speaking at the center of the choreographic focus and reflects the experience of contemporary urban life, its polyphony and multilingualism. The city as a potential habitat constantly creates new languages, jargons and variants, while marking, at the same time, the loss of certain language identities. For Liquid Loft language is inseparably linked to movement. Signs and movement patterns counteract sounds of recorded speech and noise. The Babylonian principle of many overlapping voices and modes of speech is translated through dance into interpersonal structures and a break down of contact, as well as longing and denial, in between which lie the moments of closeness, which language itself yearns for just as much. Foreign Tongues is a game of contradictions and surprising relationships which demonstrates, among other things, how much can be comprehended, even when you have the feeling you haven’t understood anything at all.

Liquid Loft was founded in 2005 by choreographer Chris Haring together with musician Andreas Berger, dancer Stephanie Cumming and dramaturge Thomas Jelinek. In their performances and installations, Liquid Loft interconnect contemporary dance directly with other forms of contemporary art, in order to create a cohesive all-embracing piece of art. Their idiosyncratic visual and formal language, their distinctive acoustic stage-sets and professional dance production have earned Liquid Loft international recognition and awards like the Golden Lion for “Best Performance at the 2007 Venice Biennale.
