The majority of all reading, writing, and seeing takes place today exclusively between machines. What many intellectuals still regard as a distant utopia has long been a reality computers and networks write completely independent texts. They compose music all by themselves, create self-sufficient new pictures and talk with each other—or with us.

This development changes our language and perception. We are witnessing a cultural revolution that we have not yet realized or even understood.

The process is only at the beginning, but has already achieved unbelievable dimensions: Self-learning computers, artificial intelligence, complex deep learning algorithms already recognize the world sometimes better than ourselves. They sometimes make better decisions, sometimes make better judgments and sometimes conceive clearer thoughts.

It is precisely this phenomenon curator Paul Feigelfeld is focusing on his exhibition „Artistic Intelligence“.

On view are both current works, which relate directly to the participation of machine intelligence in the cultural design process, as well as historical works that have anticipated this phenomenon or can be seen from today’s point of view as its forerunner.

Early code system works by Hanne Darboven, Channa Horwitz and Joseph Beuys are confronted with new works of young artists such as Constant Dullaart, Ignacio Uriarte, Julian Oliver, Cohen Van Balen and Christine Sun Kim.

Oliver’s „Stealth Cell Tower“ is setting the agenda: The object looks like an ordinary office printer. When approaching the device, the object reads the cellphone data of the gallery’s visitor with a spy software and sends him an SMS. If the visitor answers, the printer starts to chat with the visitor – and then prints the SMS conversation.

The exhibition takes place in the context of curated by_vienna: “image/reads/text”. In 2017, 21 Vienna galleries are involved in the project. In cooperation with international curators, the galleries conceptualise exhibitions opening up various perspectives on the topic. curated by_vienna is funded and organised by the Vienna Business Agency with its creative center departure with the objective of emphasising Vienna’s significance as a gallery location.
The exhibition „Artistic Intelligence“ takes place as part of the gallery festival „Curated by Vienna 2017“.
