Marcel Odenbach (*1953) is one of today’s most celebrated contemporary artists. Often concerned with Germany's National Socialist past, his work also deals with migration, freedom of expression, and social justice as recurring threads of inquiry.

At Kunsthalle Wien Marcel Odenbach presents video installations and collages of the past decades. The centerpiece, which was created especially for this exhibition, is the film Beweis zu nichts (Proof of Nothing) about the monumental national memorial built in Buchenwald concentration camp. The memorial was conceived in 1951 by Fritz Cremer and reflects the ambivalent relationship of the GDR with regard to Germany’s fascist past. Marcel Odenbach’s film addresses the question of how memory and history can be visualized and also reinterpreted or ideologized. In this sense, Odenbach’s entire œuvre calls out to address a viewer who is free from preconceptions and able to take on the present in its entanglement with the past.
