It wasn’t long before the works of the young Spanish duo El Conde de Torrefiel caused an international stir. They weave their unusual theatre poetry into tragicomic stories, absurd tableaux vivants and functional choreographies. “Intellectual textplosion” meets visual minimalism. Humorous, disconcerting images of Europe and its inhabitants reveal contradictions between political and private life, between social responsibility and personal freedom.
In Tanya Beyeler and Pablo Gisbert’s latest work, “la plaza” (the square) represents the place where people and history, collective memory and the unknown future meet. In a world overtaking itself at breakneck speed, reality becomes more and more subjective, emotional and impenetrable. There is a constant conflict between longing for the new and fearing the unknown. It has always been one of humankind’s great aspirations to gain some idea of the unpredictable future; telling stories about this quest is El Conde de Torrefiel’s passion.
