Twenty-three dancers perform individual variations of a score made up of hundreds of gestures, without ever repeating a single one – like in a moving hidden object illustration. A thunderstorm of movements in which our gaze jumps back and forth between individual events and the whole picture. No sooner have we discovered a detail than it disappears again. The highly individualised figures, with their longings, egos and fears and wearing costumes created by fashion designer Jean-Paul Lespagnard, form swarms of collective excess and melancholy to the hazy strains of Mozart’s Requiem. The formation of communities and their potential for conflict are always central themes of Boris Charmatz’s choreographic explorations. His 10000 gestes is a hypnotic work that can be seen both as an animated painting in the style of Hieronymus Bosch and as an artistic commentary on socio-political dynamics.

››Do you know Chuck Jones and Tex Avery’s cartoon character Wile E. Coyote, who is forever trying to catch the Road Runner? This coyote, this wolf, runs and when a chasm opens up at the edge of a rock, he just keeps on running. As long as he keeps running, he doesn’t fall. As soon as he looks down, he instantly plummets into the depths. In this piece we run for an hour so that we don’t fall. It is a play with passing moments, with the transience of all the experiences, events, shocks and joys of our lives. Just like seeing your whole life flash before your inner eye at the moment of death.‹‹ (Boris Charmatz)
