el paraisofono

Arriving in Valparaiso, very fast it became obvious to me that I will work around the idea of earthquakes. In my case, using vibration as a friend, featuring the dichotomy between destruction and vibrancy, giving reason for permanent reconstruction.
Meeting the hills of Valparaiso - provisional - like a sleazy fabric - I found my material - a metal grid, a raw material used for construction or protection - something unfinished, temporary.
I went to buy one - a rather fragile version - and pretty much immediately I understood how it wants to be used: it became my "surface" to shake, to vibrate. The simple but surprising trick is, that the vibrations of the grid are not directly audible (the structure is too fragile), only if objects are placed on top of it, parasitic phenomena like resonances of the objects, vibration and rattling becomes audible. Especially combined arrangements create a surprisingly complex variety of resonances, rattlings and ringings. Also this constructions have the nice side-effect to eventually collapse with stronger temblors.

Circuit-Bending, motorized cans, sounding drainpipes, metal, glass, potsherds, stone, minimalist instrumental lines as well as mechanical and electronic constructions are just as much part of the idiosyncratic sound aesthetics as drones, field recordings, feedbacks, tricky beats and of course their charismatic voice.

The solo program of the musician and media artist Christine Schörkhuber develops from a performative, experimental music performance that subsumes simultaneities, incalculability and self-contained reaction systems in a compositional structure.
