Barbis Ruder

At first glance, overlaps between game design and performative settings may not seem obvious at all. However, when taking a closer look at the two approaches it becomes apparent that both disciplines create spaces with certain sets of rules, and design characters that are subject to a certain conceptual and playful scope of action. As opposed to theatrical performances, performative art is a type of artistic play with its own reality. Usually, the authors are also the performers of their own ideas, themes and storylines. Performance is a political act and despite of its artificial setting it defines itself by means of real, personal and emotional realities, valid in their moment of action.
As such, performative arts contrast theatrical plays, which often occur within distance to what is being acted out. Playful elements aren’t equally prominent in all performative arts. However, they do help to establish room for improvisation, particularly within long-term settings, thus creating individual experiences. On the basis of her installative works, ranging from „Club Mindfuck“ and „Magistratsabteilung für Männerkultur“ (“The Municipal Department of Male Culture”) to „#L0V3_H4CK1N6“, Barbis Ruder will forge a bridge across practical examples in order to demonstrate the alternative realities within performative arts.
